The clinical focus of department of applied psychology would involves applying psychological principles and theories to address real-world issues related to mental health and well-being, often focusing on areas like stress management, coping mechanisms, personal development, and adjustment issues, but without the primary focus on diagnosing and treating severe mental disorders like clinical psychology does; essentially, it aims to improve individual functioning within various life contexts rather than solely treating clinical pathologies. 

Key aspects of clinical focus in applied psychology

M.Sc. Counselling Psychology 

  • Individual Counselling & field work – II Semester – The curriculum includes skill-based programs that provide vital hands-on experience through on-site fieldwork. Under the guidance of qualified counsellors, students will complete on-site fieldwork to observe the techniques and therapies used in counselling sessions. Students will be trained to provide individual therapeutic sessions to clients and infer the relationship among modern psychological approaches. 
  • Group Counselling & Field work – II Semester – Students establish skills required to assess the group prior to counselling, analyse the needs of the groups, plan the prospects of group counselling, identify appropriate intervention methods for the group and facilitate the intervention for the group.
  • Supervised Practicum & Field Work – III Semester – Provide the students with the skills of clinical interviewing, assessment and formulations to help them prepare for clinical work in their practicum. Students will be attached to various agencies where they will be trained and supervised in acquiring counselling skill competencies. They will also be mentored by a supervisor at the department.

B.Sc. Applied Psychology

  • Observational Postings – IV Semester Students interact with staff and students at Vidya Sudha, Early Intervention Institution, to better understand therapeutic interventions for children with developmental disabilities. This posting also offers students a unique opportunity to understand how multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary work promote better therapy outcomes. Case reports submitted by students.
  • Clinical Observation – V and VI Semesters – Students have the opportunity to learn at various clinical departments, including Psychiatry, Neuroscience, Chest & TB, Nephrology, etc. Case reports submitted by students.
